Charlie Garvin

Charlie invented, founded, and served as CEO of Personics Corporation; a pioneer in electronic music distribution which was subsequently sold to Time Warner, and Telescan Systems, manufacturer of computer-based kiosks for retail point-of-purchase marketing. He has over 25 years of experience as an institutional investor and CEO. Charlie holds a JD from Harvard Law School, a BA from Harvard College, and attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia (currently inactive). He is a US patent holder, and served as Chair of the Systems Requirements Committee of the California State Commission on Educational Technology.

John Krumme

John joined The Beta Group in 1986. He has been CEO of Sapphire Medical and President of Beta Phase. Prior to joining Beta, he founded Metcal (1981-1986), a self-regulating heating technology company, and Alchemia (1981-1986), a shape memory alloy product development company which became Beta Phase in 1986. He was also a development engineer at Raychem (1973-1979), Hewlett-Packard (1969-1973), and General Electric Medical (1967-1969). John graduated from Stanford in 1967 with a MS/MSE degree in mechanical engineering. John holds more than 20 issued patents.

Dave Plough

Dave joined The Beta Group in 1986 and has led the firm’s investments in Portaero, BPH Labs, CollOptics, FOxS Labs, and Altair Eyewear. From 1982 to 1984, he was an associate with The Boston Consulting Group. He received his BA degree in 1981 from Dartmouth College where he graduated cum laude and his MBA in 1986 from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Bob Zider

Bob founded The Beta Group in 1983 with backing from The Boston Consulting Group. From 1976 to 1983 he worked at The Boston Consulting Group, where he was a Vice President. From 1969 to 1971 he was an analytical engineer with Pratt & Whitney in the Advanced Engines Group. From 1971 to 1973, and on a part-time basis from 1974 to 1976 while attending school, Bob was a Lieutenant with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He received his BSCE in 1969 from the University of Virginia and his MBA with Distinction in 1976 from the Harvard Business School, where he was the class president.
